At the Academy, as part of our Frogstreet curriculum, we are studying animals during April. A visit focused on reptiles can be surprisingly powerful for young children’s development. Here are some clear, practical reasons why it’s beneficial:
1. Builds curiosity about nature
Seeing reptiles like snakes, turtles, or lizards up close sparks natural curiosity. Kids start asking questions and become more interested in animals and the environment.
2. Reduces fear through safe exposure
Many children are initially scared of reptiles. A guided, hands-on experience helps them learn that these animals aren’t “scary monsters,” which can replace fear with understanding.
3. Supports early science learning
Reptile visits introduce basic concepts like habitats, cold-blooded animals, scales, and life cycles. This is an engaging way to build early foundations in science.
4. Encourages sensory learning
Touching (when safe), seeing, and sometimes even hearing reptiles gives children a multi-sensory experience, which helps with memory and understanding.
5. Promotes respect for living things
Kids learn how to treat animals gently and respectfully, which builds empathy and responsibility.
6. Improves listening and attention skills
Interactive presentations require kids to listen, follow instructions, and stay engaged—important skills for school readiness.
7. Boosts language development
Children are exposed to new vocabulary (like “scales,” “habitat,” “camouflage”), and they’re encouraged to describe what they see and feel.
8. Creates memorable learning experiences
Hands-on visits are far more memorable than books or videos alone. These experiences often stick with children and reinforce learning long-term.
9. Encourages social interaction
Kids share the experience together—talking, reacting, and sometimes working up the courage to participate—which supports social development.
